Her father was a junior high school principal and her mother an interior designer. Despite this, she showed signs early on of her rebellious spirit and wild nature. She ended up at college in Los Angeles, however, she dropped out to pursue an artistic career, something she was more passionate about. This was quite common throughout the s. Many of the youth were much more focused on living in the present and chasing instant pleasure, with little worry for the future. It was during this time when she met her kindred spirit, Jim Morrison.
As the story goes they met at the London Fog on the Sunset Strip in A nightclub where The Doors used to play regularly before becoming the house band at the Whisky a Go Go. By early , the couple was living together in Los Angeles. After only a year of cohabiting together, the couple went to Los Angeles City Hall and attempted to register for a marriage license. From the beginning their relationship was tumultuous. It was comprised of loud arguments, violence, and repeated acts of infidelity from both parties.
There is one well-known instance that signifies the severity of some of their exchanges. After punching Jim due to an argument, Pam locked herself in a room to which Jim then proceeded to set fire to.
Pam narrowly escaped. Despite their tormented relationship, the couple was always able to reconcile. In after the recording of L. His destructive lifestyle had begun to catch up with him; he had grown a beard and gained significant weight. They were both addicted to alcohol and drugs at that time. For the rest of the world, the couple was enjoying their stay in Paris.
On July 3, , the sudden death of Morrison shocked the music world. He took opium and went to take a bath because he was feeling uncomfortable. He assumed to counteract the effects of the drug with a shower. Pam later discovered him lying dead in the bathtub of their apartment. Once in Paris, Morrison gained a great deal of weight and shaved off his beard. He admired the city's architecture and would go for long walks through the city.
Once there, Pam encouraged him to write poetry. Paris was proving to be good for Jim, and in matter of weeks his physical appearance reflected that benefit. He and Pam were living without pressures, without schedules, traveling anywhere they liked, coming back only when it pleased them to do so. Later, remembering an excursion from Paris to Morocco, Pam said: "I woke up one morning and saw this handsome man by the pool, talking to two young American girls.
I fell instantly in love with him. Then I realized it was Jim. I hadn't recognized him. He had got up early and shaved his beard, and he was so lean from losing so much weight, he seemed a new man. It was so nice to fall in love again with the man I was already in love with. Pam used to call the Morrisons to let them know that she and Jim were looking forward to seeing them as soon as they got back to the States.
For the first time, Jim began talking about having children. Pam loved to travel so while in Paris they went to Spain, Corsica and they planned to go to London and Switzerland. After Jim's passing, Pam returned to the States and went to live with her friend publicist Diane Gardiner who kept Pam out of the public eyes with the help of the journalist Ellen Sander.
Ellen remembers Pam: "She had a very lyrical, high-pitched voice; she was pretty, she was sweet - I never heard her say any unkind word about anybody, which impressed me. That's my description of her. She was sweet and needy. I wish I was pregnant too". Ellen recalls: "She was devastated about what had happened and what was going to happen to her.
She stayed there over a year. As a twenty-four-year-old in Paris, Pam had held the world in her hands, facing an ever brightening future with the man she loved. His first know relationship was with Mary Werbelow as his teenage lover. Later, Werbelow said that the first three albums of The Doors were dedicated to her.
