Why does coffee spill so easily

The more foam that was present, they observed, the more energy was absorbed and the less sloshing occurred. While the researchers found that just a few layers of bubbles were enough to make a difference for slosh, not all beers were equal in their spillage reduction. Once the foam is more than about five bubbles thick, the researchers found, the motion on the foam and liquid's surface becomes more horizontal than vertical. In other words, the thicker the head of foam, the less likely a spill will occur.

So when it comes to preventing sloshing, the researchers concluded, Guinness reigns supreme. Third, accelerate gradually. If you take off suddenly, a huge coffee wave will build up almost instantly, and it will crash over the rim after just a few steps. But the best way to prevent coffee spilling might be to find an unusual cup. According to Krechetnikov, ideas from liquid sloshing engineering studies, which historically were done to stabilize fuel tanks inside missiles, indicate three possibilities for spill-free cup designs: "a flexible container to act as a sloshing absorber in suppressing liquid oscillations, a series of annular ring baffles arranged around the inner wall of the container to achieve sloshing suppression, or a different shape cup.

You see, the back-and-forth motion of the fluid in most conventional-sized mugs shares a natural frequency that just happens to match that of the average person's leg movements during walking.

Basically, the rate at which we move our legs when we walk naturally exacerbates the swilling of coffee in the cups we tend to use, making us more likely to spill. The researchers also found that small irregularities in a person's walking can amplify the wilder oscillations which are set up by the naturally-matched step and slosh, further increasing the chances of a spillage.

So what can you do to avoid a spill?
