So we thought it was time to see whether the competition had got any hotter this year. Will Lidl still offer the best mince pies at the cheapest price, or will one of the major supermarkets steal the trophy for ? This year, we decided to try mince pies from eight different retailers, as well as taste a popular brand name, Mr Kipling, for good measure.

Where possible, we tasted the standard mince pies from each retailer instead of the luxury range. However, due to recent poor weather conditions, deliveries at Morrisons were sadly lacking, so we tested the ice topped mince pies instead. We also tried to get hold of packs of six mince pies where possible, although at Lidl only packs of 12 were available.

V erdict: These are by far the most expensive of those tested here, but they win on taste. The shortcrust pastry is buttery and crumbly, and the fruit and nut filling is generous and gorgeous; moist, rich and with a brandy kick.

Verdict: Another good ingredient list and a middling price. I have an explanation. You see, I have no kitchen at the moment. Just a large hole in the wall, lots of dust and a a gaggle seems like the right collective term of take away cartons in the bin. Anyway, the reason for including this recipe now is partly that I had the picture in my back pocket and partly that I bloody love Christmas, especially the culinary preparation.

I made damson gin this week and plan to start dusting down the Bell Christmas cake recipe soon. Chutney is also on the list.

Perhaps I was a 17th Century cook in a previous life. And to be honest the pastry never quite does it for me. With such a rich filling I crave sugariness. I guess the best way to describe these mince pies is as shortbread style biscuity pastry with an equal quantity of mincemeat. I hope you like them.
