Merton noted that the deviant response to strain was one of five responses he observed in society. They respond in five different stages one possible response is innovation, conformity, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion. A rebellion originates from a sentiment of indignation and disapproval of a situation and then manifests itself by the refusal to submit or to obey the authority responsible for this situation. The goal of rebellion is resistance while a revolt seeks a revolution.
Rebellion — not only rejection of goals and means, but a positive attempt to replace them with alternative values, for example, political revolutionaries, religious prophets.
Strain theory, in sociology, proposal that pressure derived from social factors, such as lack of income or lack of quality education, drives individuals to commit crime.
The ideas underlying strain theory were first advanced in the s by American sociologist Robert K. Ritualism is a concept developed by American sociologist Robert K. Merton as a part of his structural strain theory. It refers to the common practice of going through the motions of daily life even though one does not accept the goals or values that align with those practices.
Ritualism — members of this group have rejected the goals of society but have accepted the need for legitimate behaviour.
